Matcha-Ya
📋 Information
Located in Steam Mill Lane, Haymarket, Matcha-Ya is a cafe and dessert restaurant offering a modern take on traditional Japanese matcha. Opening in April 2018 in Sydney’s newest dining precinct, the space was designed by McCartney Design to introduce traditional Japanese culture to young Australians and international visitors in a contemporary way.
Matcha-Ya sources the highest quality tea by participating in tea auctions four times a year in Shizuoka, Japan, and uses premium Uji matcha from Kyoto for a deep, authentic flavour. The interior features green hexagonal floor tiles—symbolising nature and the way matcha blends into milk—and zigzag lighting inspired by Japan's mountainous terrain, creating a cozy yet modern atmosphere.
Beyond matcha-based drinks and desserts, they also serve meals like matcha soba noodles. In addition to matcha, the menu features diverse Japanese flavours like hojicha, yuzu, sakura, and black sesame, catering to everyone from beginners to matcha enthusiasts. The cozy vibe, authentic Japanese feel, and friendly staff ensure a great experience for all visitors.

✍️ Editor's Review
A matcha dessert specialist that opened in 2018, well before the global matcha craze took off. As a pioneer of matcha desserts in Sydney, it's a great place to experience a wide variety of matcha-infused food and treats.
