Located in the heart of Chatswood, Mamak Chatswood is a Malaysian restaurant that delivers the authentic flavours of Malaysian street food to this vibrant Sydney hub.
Mamak began as a market stall run by three friends—Alan, Clement, and Julian—at the Sydney Chinatown night markets. Their handmade roti canai, teh tarik, and satay became so popular that they opened their first restaurant in the Sydney CBD in 2007. The Chatswood branch opened in October 2010, and the brand has since expanded across Sydney and Melbourne. Mamak was named 'Favourite Asian' in the 2008 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide and was featured in Time Out's 'Best Cheap Eats' in 2012.
The interior is simple and functional, staying true to the traditional 'Mamak' style, while remaining clean, comfortable, and welcoming. Guests can enjoy watching the roti-making process through the glass window.
Mamak Chatswood operates on a walk-in basis, and you can expect long queues on weekend evenings. The food is consistently delicious and the portions are generous, making it perfect for sharing. The price point is rated as $$.

Once the most popular Malaysian restaurant in Sydney. The Haymarket branch is still packed with tourists, often with long lines out the door. The Chatswood branch is a great alternative where you can usually get a table without much of a wait.
It's a nostalgic spot for long-time Sydney locals and a great way for travellers to experience the city's diverse food scene. The fresh roti and curry made right in front of you are delicious, and the nasi goreng or mee goreng are also good. Since they excel at roti, the dessert roti is definitely worth trying.
