Chat Thai
📋 Information
Located in Sydney's Haymarket, Chat Thai has been a local icon since Amy Chanta first opened its doors in 1989. Renowned for serving authentic Thai cuisine, the restaurant draws inspiration from Thailand’s vibrant street food and bustling markets, focusing on fresh, local ingredients to capture true, traditional flavours. The Haymarket branch is the original flagship and played a pivotal role in establishing Sydney’s 'Thai Town'.
Following the passing of founder Amy Chanta in 2021, her children, Palisa Anderson and Pat Laoyont, have continued her legacy. As both a chef and a farmer, Palisa Anderson personally grows the organic produce used at Chat Thai, maintaining a strict commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients. The restaurant aims to provide a space where diners can experience the genuine taste of Thailand.
The menu is extensive, featuring over 100 dishes including various curries, noodles, salads, and grilled specialities, with plenty of options for vegetarians. Main courses are generally priced between $20 and $40.
Chat Thai is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Sunday to Thursday, with late-night dining available until 2:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s worth noting that wait times can be long for walk-ins, so planning ahead is recommended.

✍️ Editor's Review
With over 35 years of history, this restaurant is a true symbol of Sydney’s Thai food scene. It offers a massive variety of dishes, blending traditional Thai elements with a subtle Australian touch to ensure the flavours are approachable for everyone.
Because they use fresh ingredients and avoid over-the-top spices, the food feels light and satisfying rather than heavy. You can't go wrong with the classics here—the Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup), Pad Thai, Som Tum (green papaya salad), and Green Curry are all excellent.
