    MuffulettaTart

Tucked away in a quiet backstreet of Newtown, A.P. Town is a bakery and cafe famous for its fresh, flavourful breads, pastries, and pies. As the first standalone location for the A.P. Bakery group, it has become a major hit with Sydney locals. A.P. Bakery first made a name for itself through pop-ups in early 2020, followed by the opening of A.P. House on the rooftop of Paramount House Hotel. In June 2022, they expanded to Newtown with A.P. Town. The venture was co-founded by Mat Lindsay (Head Chef at Ester), Russell Beard (Reuben Hills), Ping Jin Ng (Paramount House Hotel), and Head Baker Dougal Muffet. They prioritise sustainability and local ingredients, even milling their own grains on-site to create their signature breads and pastries. A.P. Town features an industrial yet rustic vibe and operates primarily as a 'grab-and-go' spot. While seating is limited, you can enjoy their fresh bakes alongside Reuben Hills coffee and Teacraft teas. The local response was so overwhelming that they sold out before noon on their opening day. Despite some chatter about sandwich prices, the feedback on taste and portion size remains overwhelmingly positive.

    Turkish Ice CreamBaklava

Hakiki Newtown is one of Sydney’s most famous Turkish ice cream parlours. More than just a dessert shop, it’s a brand that introduces the traditional ice cream and dessert culture of Turkey’s Maraş region, earning a loyal following from locals and tourists alike. Hakiki was founded in 2015 by Nev Bagriyanik and his wife, **Zeyneb Bagriyanik**. Hailing from Maraş, Turkey, the couple opened their first store in Newtown with the goal of introducing the traditional ice cream they grew up with to Australia. It’s a family-run business where Nev makes the ice cream himself, while Zeyneb handcrafts most of the desserts, including the baklava and Turkish delight. The biggest difference from regular gelato or ice cream is the use of **Salep (wild orchid root powder)**. This ingredient gives the ice cream its signature chewy, stretchy texture and prevents it from melting easily. Traditionally, the ice cream is so dense that it is sometimes eaten with a knife and fork—a hallmark of authentic Maraş ice cream.

Westwood in Newtown is famous for its wood-fired pizzas and creative toppings. Located at 245 Australia St, this spot has built a massive reputation through word-of-mouth among pizza enthusiasts. Opened in 2021, chef Mitchell Westwood started his own pizzeria drawing on his experience at Queen Margherita of Savoy and Bella Brutta. The pizzas feature a three-day fermented sourdough base made from Australian flour, resulting in a unique flavour and texture. While the space is small, you can watch the chef hand-knead the dough and fire the pizzas in the oven. Indoor seating is limited, so most customers opt for takeaway. Westwood’s pizza is so popular that demand far exceeds supply, so you’ll need to plan ahead to get a taste. They only sell a maximum of 174 pizzas a day, with orders starting from opening at 5 PM. Popular items sell out fast, so it’s best to order early or arrive right at opening. Pizzas are priced between $22 and $35.
