Located in Marrickville, Coffee Alchemy is a roastery and cafe that focuses purely on the essence of coffee. After starting as a small operation in Dulwich Hill, they opened their Marrickville roastery in 2005 and have been running an espresso bar since 2008. The current Sydenham Road location offers a much brighter and more spacious environment than before. Owner Hazel de los Reyes developed a deep love for coffee while growing up in the Philippines, where her grandmother grew coffee beans. She is a highly respected figure in the Australian specialty coffee scene, having won the Australian Barista Championship in 2005 and the Australian Cup Tasters Championship in 2007, along with multiple NSW Barista titles. The interior features high windows, a long timber counter, teal walls, and vintage chairs, with the roasting area close enough that you can smell the fresh beans. This isn't a place for a long brunch or a lounge session; it’s a space dedicated to the coffee itself. They display a range of freshly roasted blends and single-origin beans, offering everything from espresso and milk-based drinks to filter and cold brew. Coffee Alchemy works directly with producers in origins like Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica to ensure high-quality, fair sourcing. Instead of being pre-packaged, beans are weighed out from glass hoppers right when you order.
