📋 ABN vs TFN: What's the difference?

    TFN (Tax File Number)

For standard employees. Your employer withholds tax and guarantees super and leave.

    ABN (Australian Business Number)

For freelancers and the self-employed. You handle your own tax, super, and insurance.

※ Be careful: If a casual job asks for an ABN, it might be 'sham contracting' to avoid paying benefits.

    ⚠️ Caution

'Cash in hand' work paid without tax or super reporting can be illegal. The minimum rate that applies to you depends on your age, employment type and the applicable award — check with the Fair Work Ombudsman (☎ 13 13 94, fairwork. gov. au).
